Security Basics

Safe habits for everyday IT work.

Most security problems start with ordinary habits, not movie-style hacking: a reused password, a skipped update, a rushed click on a message. Good habits remove a large share of everyday risk, and they are the base for anyone who later studies security as a career.

This area covers the habits first: strong passwords, two-factor authentication, spotting phishing, updates and backups. It then explains the ideas behind them, including malware, encryption, what a VPN does and the three goals of security known as confidentiality, integrity and availability.

Who it helps: Start here if you want safer habits at home or at work, or if you are thinking about a security career and need the basics first.
